For trying to make live vaccine, the virulence of Oita isolate of Babesia gibsoni was attenuated by 900 passages in microaerophilus stationary phase (MASP) culture. Two dogs inoculated with the attenuated parasites did not elicit any clinical sign, but seroconverted. Two inoculated dogs were challenged with the virulent B. gibsoni isolate at the 60th day after inoculation. None of the inoculated dogs developed fever, but they showed low PCV depression and low parasitemia. The control dog challenged with the virulent isolate showed high fever (more than 40℃), severer PCV depression, and high parasitemia. These results suggested that the attenuated isolate was safety and effectivity as live vaccine. |
