Inflammation was first initiated by T-lymphocyte infiltration at 5 weeks of age in male rats and was associated with infiltration of B-lymphocytes and macrophages later on. The macrophages were far less than lymphocytes among the infiltrating cells. A half of the infiltrating lymphocytes was CD8-positive ones. In female rats the population of the infiltrating cells was similar to that in male rats but the severity of the tubulo-interstitial lesions was less intense. The expression of genes and their products of ICAM-1 and MCP-1 in the renal cortex of male rats was increased with age. Immunohistochemistry showed that the expression of MMP-1 was decreased and that of its inhibitor, TIMP-1 was increased in the cortex with age. Urinary excretion of TIMP-1 and several chemokines such as MCP-1 was detected in the early age of male rats and their change in excretory amount with age was seemed to be in accordance with those in
